Remembering President Jimmy Carter

This week, the world mourns the loss of President Jimmy Carter, who peacefully passed away at the age of 100. His long and impactful life left indelible marks on many, including myself. Reflecting on his contributions not just as a leader but as a person, I’m reminded of a personal interaction that deeply inspired me.

In 2012, as I was working on my 3rd book “Future American President,” which envisioned children from each state growing up to lead the nation, I decided to write to President Carter. I felt a message from him in my book to future presidents would be a powerful addition to the project. The book aimed to capture the dreams of 100 children across America, each sharing their visions of future leadership. On September 17, 2012, I sent a letter to President Carter, not only wishing him well but also asking for his advice to these potential future leaders.

I explained the essence of the book and expressed my hope that his words would guide these future leaders. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I would receive a response, but I believed in the significance of my project and hoped it would resonate with him.

To my surprise and delight, a month later, I received a reply. I opened my mailbox to find an envelope postmarked on October 17, from Atlanta, Georgia, with President Carter’s name on it. Inside was my original letter with a hand-written note from the President himself. His message was succinct yet profound: “Matthew, my advice is: ‘Tell the Truth. Keep the Peace. Accommodate changing times but cling to unchanging principles.’” Signed, “Best wishes, Jimmy Carter.”

These words, “Tell the Truth, Keep the Peace, Accommodate changing times but cling to unchanging principles,” resonate deeply today as 2024 draws to an end. They not only encapsulated his legacy of integrity and peace but also served as timeless counsel for anyone aspiring to lead.

A few months later, my journey brought another unexpected turn. While traveling on a flight, I met Dan Horn, a principal and a friend of the Carters. We talked about my project, and exchanged information as he was intrigued by my project. In February 2013, Dan facilitated an invitation to a dinner honoring President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. That evening, I had the privilege of briefly meeting the Carters, an experience that enriched the already profound connection I felt through his written words.

My project, “Future American President: 50 States, 100 Families, Infinite Dreams,” was completed and published in the fall of 2014, featuring photographs and visions of 100 children from across the United States. Zendaya, an up-and-coming actress at the time, wrote the introduction, helping to bring the book to a wider audience.

As we remember President Carter today, I reflect on his advice not just as words on a page but as guiding principles that continue to influence young leaders everywhere. His legacy is a testament to the power of leading with honesty, maintaining peace, and upholding steadfast principles through changing times. President Carter’s impact on the world and on individuals like myself will be remembered for generations to come.
